The last of the annual fires occurred 1979 as the following year the fire exclusion project commenced at Soalr Village. The pioneering residents set up a citizen science project of a fire exclusion zone within the highly flammable landscape of the top end savanna. As a result many rare plant and animal species have returned and are now flourishing, a number of research enquired have taken place within the experiment some examples from 10, 20, 40 years can viewed below.
As part of the experiment plant and animal recruitment was not directly aided by people and all species that were recruited came by their own means. At the library site, what was a spare bloodwood grassland has been replaced tropical woodland jungle with gallery riparian rainforest. Currently there are 3 nest boxes placed in trees to provide data for an arboreal mammal project.
