WHAT WE DO
Sunshower Communications is located in the Solar Village which began in 1980 with members choosing to live 'off grid', experimenting with new independent technologies and co managing a 320 acres of bushland. it serves as an important ongoing experiment in sound ecological landscape management. Sunshower Communications is socially beneficial multi-use library, a space where theory and practise has a platform. To be used to promote debate, confront convention, and formulate alternative ways of thinking and being. Dialogue and projects range from ecological experiments, scientific education, research projects, artistic practises, activist skill sharing and strategic rehabilitation of nature and society. The physical Sunshower Communications library is a solar powered cyclone proof structure built onsite with recycled materials at the Solar Village. It is an intersection of sustainable living within a rich natural landscape acknowledging the participatory nature community, cultural and scientific projects.
In The Beginning
Initially started by an individual named Strider as a radical communications system at a protest camp in 1970's within the what is now Kakadu National Park. Strider had shed the long white socks of public servant to serve the rest of his life to pursue the inter-relatedness of social and environmental justice. His vision was deep and broad and serves as an example for the trajectory of future projects weaved within Sunshower Communications.
Strider wrote at camp concern 1976, it was about his house, Sunshower which had a library and he is talking conceptually about his being and housing. This is the oldest and closet ' stream of consciousness' about the topic;
Sunshower Communications is a display site, a temple, a stage and shelf built to facilitate the expression and action of a communications network as well as to represent symbolically, statistically and if you like monumentally.
The structure is making a statement about material needs for shelter and of to be in the forest, not in a box. And it keeps dry, go away and come back to find yourself waiting at home. Feel free to explore your nearby surroundings, not shut out by private land, behave like the earth and in harmony with the earth, surely we all learn by example.
Insane and as sacred as the universe, let it flow, free, be, go with it. Jump from
your skin or make a mask, reflect the right place at the right time through the quality of your dance, it will, yield the satisfaction of life's work, expecting your shape.
